Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an ecological survey for my planning application?

Most planning authorities require ecological information for applications affecting land with semi-natural vegetation, mature trees, ponds, or buildings with potential for roosting bats. A preliminary appraisal determines whether detailed surveys are necessary.

How far in advance should I commission surveys?

Protected species surveys are seasonal, so early engagement is essential. For complex sites, we recommend contacting us at least six months before your target planning submission date to allow for multiple survey visits.

What is biodiversity net gain and does it apply to my project?

Since February 2024, most developments in England must deliver at least 10% biodiversity net gain. This is calculated using a statutory metric that compares habitat value before and after development. We can assess your baseline and advise on achieving compliance.

Can surveys be done in winter?

Preliminary appraisals and some habitat assessments can proceed year-round. However, most protected species surveys require specific seasonal conditions when animals are active and detectable. We advise on optimal timing during initial consultation.
